I
may say it is OK for students to contact me
but not right now. The Professors at Manhattan were very
involved with the students and were interested in telling us
about the real world. If you asked for help
or were curious about certain topics they would help you
and direct you to outside libraries, museums, associations and people
who were experts. They also followed up with you to
make sure you got what you were looking for.
Manhattan
was also a very social place and we had the
ability to mix with the alumni and visiting experts from
all walks of life. My buddies and I were introduced
Nobel Prize winners and went with them to various lectures
and bars in the city. It was amazing for the
first time in my life I was treated like a
knowedgable person.
The School had many Christian Brothers then,
most of whom were brilliant. Some were in their 30's
some in their 70's and all had a great sence
of humor and loved teaching. The casual conversations about history,
business, the future and the city were mind opening.
The
best thing they taught me is to get a position
that I loved in a field that challenged me mentally
and physically. I did what they said and I really
don't feel like I worked a day in my life
since then. Sure I faced a lot of pressure, I
would have been bored out of mind if I didn't.
The other students there were great to me. Manhattan is
the kind of school where Freshman to Seniors all hang
togeather and share ideas and teach one another.
If I
could do it all again I would spend more of
my time reading to learn and not just to
get good grades. I also would have continued my
education and spent more time after I graduated taking adult
ed and doing it at different schools to meet people
and Teachers from a more varied backround. Business gives you
some of that, I didn't realize that it only gave
you some of that untill my daughter started getting close
to college age.
I'm glad I learned and because
it is never to late.
I recommend H.S. and College
Students to interact with all the minds at school and
try to learn something from every one they are with
during college. Share new ideas and thougts and look for
new ideas. Really learn how technology can help you to
expand your mind and not just use it as modern
telephone or for games. Get involved and improve your school
and help out others who need it.
Further, I hope
they go into a field because they love it and
not just one because the job market is hot right
now. That changes quickly and becomes cold at the worst
time possible for many who go that route. Don't ever
look for a job but rather look for a position
or profession that serves as a source of income and
pleasure. You may be in your office for 16
hours a day but it will never seem that long
and you'll never be upset that your vacation is over.
Also watch out who you associate yourself with. DO NOT
hang around with negative people who believe that the world
owes them a living or crooks, Be yourself and always
make yourself better.
Open a 401K or a Mutual
Fund your Freshman year and start out putting 25.00 a
month in it and don't tell anyone except the professors
in the Business School that you did it.
