| If
you want to do Computer Graphics, and you happen to
also be restricted by area, I'd say Mercy isn't the
WORST choice, but you could do so much better. Every
now and again there are some terrible teachers, there are
some awful teachers, but most of all, there are LAZY
teachers that don't motivate you beyond your potential. It's a
good school if you want to go in for something
average like a teaching position, however, beyond that, it's totally
disorganized and it's poorly funded. The program is also crippled
by bad decision making, (Seriously, the school spent nearly over
100,000 dollars on Cintiq Wacom tablets for the Art and
Design Program, but they can't afford any models, and they
don't have enough easels for the students. They spent money
on console systems AND games for a lounge in the
White Plains campus, but they can't afford to expand that
campus for more classrooms since it only has two floors,
and hardly enough room for art classes.) But I'd be
lying if I blamed it all on the people who
run the school. In my short stay there, I saw
a lot of kids fight teachers and complain when they
didn't have things their way. I'd even go out on
a limb and say that if the teachers weren't bad,
the students were worse. All of these elements combined really
made for quite an unpleasant learning environment, and when I
left, I didn't regret a damn thing. I ended up
switching out from there to a SUNY school in the
city and quite the difference in attitude that I saw.
Mercy Students have developed in other institutes (trufax) a reputation
of self entitlement, an inability to handle tasks thrown at
them, and a hell of an attitude problem to boot
for a reason. I can say that some of it
has to do with the fact that most of these
kids came out of High School with no goals and
an attitude that things will be automatically handed to them
on a silver platter *cough cough* Westchester kids* cough cough*.
You ask most of them how they get good grades,
and they will tell you they haven't changed their work
ethic since High School. Overall, Mercy College is a
last resort for most, because trust me, it's not the
GREATEST school. If you are serious about your education and
getting something out of it, look elsewhere. If you want
to take some easy classes or even classes that you
know might help your GPA out in Continuing Education, it's
not a bad place to look into. Just stick to
yourself and don't make friends with anyone.
