Well everything you read on these sites were true as still are true. For example the registar is horrendous. The first time I registered for classes I was told to go from one office to the other and literally was a 8 hour affair to get all the classes I wanted from each department. Each time after that it gradually got better and they centralized a lot of the registering in acedemic advising. If you are an incoming freshman I would expect quite a bit in scholarships up to half and then expect some pratt and pell grants as well. Transfer students like me on the other hand we get screwed with scholarships only getting 5000 when tuition is around 35000 now. But grants helped me out and I only put 10000 on loans.

The campus is gorgeous during the summer, but a little depressing during the winter. The facilities were really bad when I first got here, my first class light color and design class had a hole in the roof and the floor which the water would drip from the ceiling to the hole in the floor and gives a visit to the floor below. But since then they did a lot of things to fix up the place. This was all from the reaccreditation process which forced Pratt to actually use our tuition on fixing up the place. We have a new bookstore, new windows on the main building, new garden area, and a new connection between Stueben and Pratt Studios.

But this school isn't about the facilities. The main thing I got out of this school was how to think. As dumb as that sounds that is the key thing for any art related job. A good idea can go a long way. They don't teach much about techniques in the communication design department but more how to create good concepts that sell in the real world. You learn technique from having to do some many projects. They will overload you with work which often leaves some weeks lacking of social life. The school is extremely competitive and cut throat. You will get a couple people that will truly help you instead of stabbing you in the back. but its a rarity. Also ask upper classmen who are the best teachers. This school really depends on the teacher. Check out the ratings on ratemyprofessor.com there are pretty valid comments there about teachers. Mostly people complain about the way professors crit. The key to that you have to think of professors as clients and you'll run into clients who are the biggest pain and you're going to have to deal with it. Pratt has some of the best teachers and some of the worst, but take the bad teachers as a learning experience of you should have asked someone about that professor prior to taking his class. But the teachers who are really good at this school will make you be the best you can be. (not in the army sense)

So in short, this school got me a dynamite portfolio which I'm confident enough to get me a 40K job. With 5-10 years experience there are six figure jobs for creative directors and such I could go for. So all the complaints about bad facilities, snobby students, extremely poor adminstration, they all go away when you end up with a highly reputatable BFA from a top art school, a sweet portfolio and a job of your choice. If you don't believe me check out the pratt show its held every year (mid may) in manhattan in the hammerstein ballroom.

questionI'm trying to be able to afford pratt but I only got like 6,000 dollar scholarship… how'd you get those grants? any advice on the financial aspect of going to pratt would be greatly appreciated!

I was accepted as a fashion student and it's my dream to get to go. :D

questionWould you know anything about the Communications Design department at PrattMWP? Did you know anyone who went there and transferred to this campus after two years?
