As far as the writing major is concerned, the professors genuinely care about what you are doing as a student AND as a person. I've had many of my professors from freshman year, first semester still contact me and ask how I am doing and if I need help. They really do want you to succeed and are willing to help as much as possible AS LONG AS YOU ARE WILLING TO ASK FOR IT.

Don't expect to be treated as a child though or babied (except in grammar class, which you should test out of). You will have to fend for yourself. You will have to ask for extensions. You will have to be punctual. And you will have to ask if you want some extra help or just want some advice. They give a lot initially but they cannot be expected to give out every bit of advice or help you with all of your problems UNLESS you ask for it. The professors are also very flexible and understanding.

The workload isn't really heavy, but your studio classes and special topics classes do have a lot of work. And it builds as the semester goes forward. Sometimes it seems pointless, but it eventually pans out that you've grown SO much as a writer.
