St. Lawrence University is a wonderful college set in the peaceful town of Canton, NY. The campus is beautiful - lots of open, green space instead of an endless sea of concrete. The campus is full of architectural flavor - ranging from late 1800s Victorian styled buildings such as Richardson Hall to the recently completed modern, environmentally friendly Johnson Hall of Science. The professors are welcoming - if you have a question, do not hesitate to ask! They are more than willing to help. St. Lawrence University is not like any other college where the professors will only know you as a number. The student body here at St. Lawrence is unique in that you will find students from urban public schools in a class with students from private boarding schools. The majority of students are very friendly although you will run into a few snooty students. Some potential students are intimidated by the stereotypical image of the student body - the stereotypical student at St. Lawrence is decked out in a Ralph Lauren polo, khakis, a North Face fleece and if they are a girl, attached to their Vera Bradley bag. This is actually not the case. You will find a plethora of different social groups but everyone fits in regardless. The FYP, or First Year Program, at St. Lawrence University is designed to alleviate the stress of getting to know people while enlightening you on intriguing topics you choose. The FYP is one of the few programs in the US of its kind. There are many activities on campus. The various theme cottages we have host numerous events throughout the year. The Outing Club Theme cottage hosts an annual Halloween party that is widely regarded as the best party of the year. Other activities include barbecues, parties and festivals. St. Lawrence University is well known for it's rivalry between neighboring Clarkson University. The ice hockey game between St. Lawrence and Clarkson is a huge attraction on campus and the neighboring communities. The food on campus is great. There are various options for vegetarians, vegans and hearty eaters. The fruits and vegetables used in the recipes are locally grown, so you'll always know where your food is coming from. There's also a Caribou Coffee Cafe on campus.St. Lawrence University is a small college. There are only around 2000 students. The winters can get very cold and it's typical to get two or three feet of snow during the winter. There's no city nightlife in the town of Canton. Ottawa or Montreal are hot spots for the nightlife atmosphere (some students from St. Lawrence go there on the weekends because they are approximately two hours away). Most students stay in Canton and go to the local bars instead. Drinking is common on campus but it doesn't offset the academic atmosphere of the school: most students keep it in perspective. If you are looking for a large college that is in a locality that has very little or no snow and has a large nightlife scene then St. Lawrence is not the place for you. If you are looking for a small, liberal arts college that is in a serene setting whose student body is big on sports and the outdoors, St. Lawrence is the place for you!
