Medical Billing And Coding

As a medical billing and coding specialist whether or not the doctor gets paid what the doctor is due or if the doctor gets paid at all rests on your shoulders. In some instances depending on the medical offices size, the two roles of medical billing and medical coding may be broken up amongst two or more workers.

Your job as a medical coder is to take the information from the documentation of the patients visit, figure out the appropriate medical codes, create the claim and bill whomever is suppose to pay for the visit be it the patient, a commercial payer or some other payer.

Medical billers will typically have a solid understanding of human anatomy and physiology, be good with numbers and understand complex medical terminology.

It is not required but highly recommended that medical coders get certified by earning their certification as a Certified Professional Medical Coder.

According to the bureau of labor statistics 2012 outlook, medical billing and coding jobs are growing at a faster pace than average at 22% over a 10 year period. Over 50k jobs are going to be added in this area over the next 10 years.
