Hampden-Sydney is a small, conservative liberal arts institution in southern Virginia. The campus is beautiful, the students friendly, and the faculty is great. It is not hard to get into this school; however, don't think that because the admissions office is lax that the workload or class requirements are. Most students will tell you that it is easy to get into Hampden-Sydney but challenging to stay in. If you like to skip classes or are unmotivated, this is probably not the place for you. The faculty here is great. Most have terminal degrees in their respective fields, and I have only had one professor that I thought was "unaccessible" in the two years I have attended, but compared to a large school, he was probably very accessable. The cirriculum here could probably use a bit of an update, for some of the majors, while completely useful in the real world, don't sound that way. This campus is very laid back. Most people study all week, but the fun starts on Thursday nights, usually at off-campus houses that fraternities own. Fraternities provide most of the entertainment on campus, and the parties are usually wild. Don't let the single sex atmosphere deter you: lots of girls come over from the several single sex institutions nearby, and it is easy to make good friends with them. Farmville, where the school is located, sucks. It is a small town with relatively nothing to do. The food at school is decent, but the staff that works in the cafeteria are usually unfriendly or downright mean as hell. I have attended this school for 2 years, and have loved it. However, the best advice i can give is that this school is not for everyone. I have had several fraternity brothers transfer to bigger schools. The retention rate at this school is rather low, partly due to kids that flunk out the first year, and partly because of people looking for a big school atmosphere. However, don't let the rankings of this school fool you: Hampden-Sydney provides a top-notch education for those who choose to work hard to obtain it.
