Michigan Tech is offers a very different environment compared to other schools in Michigan. The people of the Upper Penninsula are very warm (despite the frigid weather) and approachable. The programs are very respectable and usually require an immense amount of work. The Engineering program requires many long hours. The business cirriculum core classes are simple, whereas the concentration core classes require much more work. The student to faculty ratio is very reasonable allowing you opportunities to talk with faculty (yes, they will actually remember your name!).

However, MTU has it's bad points. If you're a male, expect a 1:4 ratio of men to women (invese to the national ratio), long and very cold winters, homework almost all of the time, and severe boredom. Houghton, Michigan isn't exactly a metropolis of excitement. But, hey, at least Walmart is open 24 hours! Diversity is also a big issue. Expect a primarily white campus. Most minorities stick together and hardly co-mingle.

Some comments about the Business Administration cirriculum. You should expect a lot of flack from the Engineers on campus. Being that MTU is an Engineering school, expect them to flaunt their superiority, and for good reason. The business program, while accredited, harbors quite a few morons. So, if you're interested in the businss cirriculum, stick it out for a few years and just ignore the jocks. MTU has a excellent Finance and Accounting programs that are worth checking out.

As I was in the Engineering program for several years, I have comments about that program as well. Expect to take a lot of math and science courses. Also expect to not find out what an engineer actually does until you graduate. Although a good program, MTU is said to be close to on-par with MIT, UofM, or Cornell's engineering programs.

Unfortunately for MTU, the cost of attendance has significantly increased since I began school. While MTU used to be quite a bargain, look forward to paying close to what you would pay to attend UofM. The cirriculum has also been severely dumbed down. This has been due to declining revenues and student attendance. Yes, MTU used to fail a ton of students…not so much anymore.

On a final note, if you're looking for a party school, I'd look elsewhere. Sure, there is a lot of drinking, but nothing compared to what you'd at Ferris or Central. Expect to work hard and party when you have time!
