Date: Dec 02 2003
Major: Philosophy (This Major's Salary over time)
The Philosophy department is great, but the University itself is sliding downhill. With the highest tuition of any Big 12 school, you'd think that this would be justified with a great education. If you're a Life Sciences or Journalism major, you're in luck. Otherwise, you'll find that the departments here are struggling to get by with what little they have. The gravity of the situation is not readily apparent since the departments seem to do a good job of keeping things together, but there are several times when you'll see something that suggests it is all a facade. The campus is well-maintained and is actually very beautiful, but the emphasis of form over function results in needless projects like the Tiger Spot. It's almost surreal to leave the beautiful, tree-lined sidewalk and enter the dank dungeon-like Arts and Sciences building, replete with broken overhead projectors and gum-encrusted desks from 1978. It's all about external appearances here at MU.
