In classes, you will be exposed to a faculty body of which 95% have their terminal degree and so you can be ensured that you will be taught by experienced and knowledgeable faculty. What Types of Leadership Opportunities Exist?

At Roanoke you will be able to engage in leadership opportunities through the Campus Activity Board(CAB) by becoming the chairperson for one of the six different committees. You will have the ability to bring to campus, performers, activities, and speakers that affect the entire community.

If you have been a class representative prior to college, you have similar opportunities through the Student Government Association (SGA). This umbrella organization makes decisions regarding funding, organizational charters, and is instrumental in providing the forum for student to interact with administration so that all students can enjoy their Roanoke College experience. My experience with SGA in the position of class president during my Freshmen and Junior years and vice-president my sophomore year has been exciting. In this position, you are able to make a difference in the lives of every student on campus not just your class members.

There are endless opportunities at Roanoke for you to engage in leadership opportunities. If SGA and CAB do not fulfill your needs, there are numerous organizational leadership positions available from over 80 different student organizations. There are also four sororities and three fraternities that are nationally recognized, in addition to the honor societies and scholarly organizations that exist on campus.

So How Do You Succeed?

Roanoke College has a multitude of different facilities that will enable and empower you to develop the skills necessary to succeed in college. Two places will help you to maximize your talents and to develop new skills. The Office of Academic Services and Career Services offer a variety of programs that will provide you the means to excel.

Greg Wells whose name is memorized by many students assists in the Office of Academic Services. He can single handily increase you performance in any field and can help develop a plan to increase your achievement. There are three main services that are offered by this department: Peer-tutoring, Coffee Shops, and helping with academic advising. Peer tutoring is offered in most subjects and is located in the Fintel Library. Each week, students of various disciplines congregate to the basement of Fintel where there are knowledgeable students that are waiting to help. In addition to the peer tutoring, Coffee Shops occur during lunch and allow students to receive answers to questions. These tutoring opportunities are just one way that students are able increase their comprehension as each professor also holds office hours and are readily available to all students. In addition to the functional aspects of Academic Services, this is also home to the intensive advising program. Every student receives his or her first advisor, whom you should already have met, in the summer before the first year. In a student’s second year, one will begin to declare his or her major and obtain an academic advisor for his or her tenure at Roanoke College. This professor is not simply a person who helps you to register for courses but is a friend who will support you at all times.

Working in conjunction with Academic Services is the Office of Career Services. Here you will find resources to excel in your particular field through internships, and summer job placements. If you come to college and are not sure what your field of study should be, Roanoke is the place to discover your untapped potential. Career Services offers a series of aptitude tests that can give you a sense of what potential jobs would be a fit for you. As you begin to investigate the field of internships, and the job market, Career Services will help you to develop contacts and network with key individuals. You will find that Roanoke College can offer you a plethora of opportunities to advance and to develop any skill.
