If you are thinking of coming to school in Hawaii, you should be in it for more then the classroom time. The schools in hawaii (I've been to both UH and HPU) are nothing special academicaly, but then again, maybe you don't care about that. If you want to surf and then hit your classes in the afternnoon, then HPU might be the place for you. Then again, Hawaii is so expensive that you may need to work 20+ hours a week just to pay the rent.

I have had a lot of negative experiences at HPU, but a great time living in Hawaii. Overall, my profesors have been interesting, creative, and challenging. However they are frustrated by the low pay that they recieve, and sometimes it shows. One of my teachers actually forgot to show up for the final exam!

HPU is an example of propoganda at its most outrageous. If you look at their brochures or website, all you see is beautiful pictures of the windward campus (the school operates from two locations). But about 80% of classes are taught in the downtown honolulu campus, which is without a doubt the worst location in Hawaii. There are bums and crazy people all over the place because there is a clinic for the mentally ill called Safe Haven literally on campus. I have seen EVERYTHING in the last two years here- transvestite hookers prowling the streets at night, a mentally ill man who sat on campus in a prom dress with a tiara everyday for months, a six foot tall violent crazy with a 7 inch mohawk, etc etc. If you are an attractive woman, watch out- you will be harassed. Carry pepper spray. Not a week goes by when I am not approached by some loon and hit on.

Also, at the downtown campus there is no free parking. Expect to pay a minimum of 4 dollars a day, and that's only if you are willing to walk a bit to get to school. Last week I was walking up the stairs from a parking garage and- surprise! there are two crazy bums with empty beer cans blocking the stairs. Life as usual here.

The student life here is rather apathetic. We have amazing diversity here, but little cohesion. The atmosphere can feel very commuter campus, especially since the location is so unpleasant- most students want to get in and get out. For the most part you have to fend for your self. There are a lot of interesting people here though. You can hear some really amazing stories if you start talking to people, and people are friendly if you introduce yourself. If you are a student who is looking for a non-traditional university with diversity and internatonal perspectives, this school might interest you. What I find that I value the most is the independence that I fostered by living in Hawaii. If you are from the mainland it takes guts to move out to the island and try to carve out a space for yourself. To be honest most people don't like the school and don't adjust very well. Hawaii is very, very different from the mainland. But for those who stay and make this place their home, there's no where else we'd rather be.

I'd recommend UH over HPU anyday. I am going to stay and graduate at HPU becaus the credits don't transfer very well from HPU- so be warned- unless you are willing to give up your time and money, it can be very difficult to transfer out of HPU after you have put in a year of class work. I have learned a lot at HPU over the past two years, some of my professors have been really great. The HPU president and "higher ups" however, are only interested in taking student money and attracting more "victims" from the mainland with their slick brochures and advertising campaigns. They are deaf to student complaints about no parking, a dirty and unsafe campus, and tuition that doesn't seem to be going back into the programs.

As a final note, although the dorms can be a good place to meet people, and they are located in the beautiful Kaneohe valley region, they HPU housing people really do violate your rights. The food is buggy and disgusting, and the campus is so far away from town at night there is nothing to do. HPU security guards crack down hard on the students, so the normal parties and college night life has to be very covert here. If you don't have a car, and you live in the dorms, you will be riding the bus a lot, which sucks. There really is no reason to go to HPU with UH right around the corner- unless you are an abnormal psychology major.
