Cal Poly is a great place to spend your undergraduate school years. The surrounding town of San Luis Obispo is beautiful and, despite its size of just 44,000 people, there are plenty of interesting things to do. Several beaches are just a short drive or bike ride away, and the surrounding mountains offer great outdoor adventures. Downtown San Luis Obispo offers an unrivaled farmers market every Thursday, and coffee houses, vintage clothing stores, funky restaurants, and used bookstores line the streets. There has been an influx of higher end retail, and fancy restaurants and bars, so if your taste is disciminating, you will not be let down. One unfortunte consequence of living in such a desirable place is the unavailability of afforable housing. For second, and third year students, with little rental history, it is especially difficult to find a place to live that is not inhospitable without having to spend upwards of $600 a month for your own room, or $900 for a studio.
