Yeah, if you want to party, go elsewhere. If you want to feel like part of some big warm family, try somewhere else. If you want to be full of school spirit or some such nonsense, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

However, if you want to compete with some fairly brilliant students and faculty (Yes, even the relations with faculty tend to be competitive.) and prepare yourself for a hard cut-throat engineering environment: Welcome.

The campus in general, but the engineering department in particular is a rather independent set of people. Everything is highly competitive (this helps explain one of the highest campus suicide rates) and while everyone is friendly, everyone tends to look out for themselves and not much further.

The faculty is a mixed bag, some of them are extremely helpful and accesible, and some of them are arrogant bastards who would just as soon squash you as teach you. But you can learn alot from all of them. In fact, the challenge of beating some of those arrogant profs has been excellent motivation.

Conclusion: UCSD is for students who are independent, you have to learn on your own, and motivate yourself. No one here cares to hold your hand or babysit.
