i recently transfered to UCSC and here are my thoughts on probably the most underrated of all the schools in the vaunted UC system.

pros: great newly updated facilities, a beautiful view of the forest and the ocean, plenty of wildlife roaming around, more individual attention from faculty, laid back atmosphere, mostly great professors, interesting courses, and a general lack of snottiness. its a real gem of a university that feels more like a liberal arts college.

cons: doesn't have the rep of the higher up UCs. but the reality is that those places are consider great institutions because of their graduate programs, and hardly their undergraduate quality. the awful truth is, that most of the UCs are of equal quality at the undergraduate level. you will not get a superior education from other UCs except maybe berkeley. school could use a little more diversity as the population is half white and traveling around campus can be streneous since its on a hill, generally requiring a bus. the town of santa cruz also might not exactly be right for some people since its a very liberal and grungy city. if u want to get an decent education santa cruz is a great choice.
