Date: Aug 02 2006 Major: Fine Arts - Painting/Sculpture/Photography/etc (This Major's Salary over time) It is very important for students of art to consider the way in which they will support themselves out of college, and whether they choose to define themselves as an artist or as a designer. Of my peers, the small percentage of them working as represented gallery artists and/or curators 10 years later either paid for this status dearly, or were fortunate enough to have significant parental support. If you dont' have a silver spoon, you can possibly still make it, but only if you are willing to sacrifice family life and emotional well being while holding down 2 jobs—your day job and your studio work—for several years. The people who stick it out are the people who make it. Period. How many years you will need to do so is a function of a) how lucky you are, b) how good you are at schmoozing, and c) how lucky your friends are and how well you keep in touch with them over the years. On the plus side, even if you do not choose to pursue gallery work in the end, SFAI has a rich, rich cultural community. Big cities like New York and LA have groups of graduates who are wonderful and generally supportive of eachother, both professionally and emotionally. Good luck!
