If you want to attend a University with 21,000+ other people, then UCI is for you. If you'd rather actually be able to talk with your professors when you need help and not just during their one hour per week office session, I'd suggest going elsewhere. It's pretty typical for a large public university - grades can be competitive, some courses set the curve so that anywhere from 1/3 to 1/4 of the class fails, and your professors don't have time usually to help people outside the lecture hall because they teach 1,200 students a day. It'll be this way until you're at least in your 3rd year. All of this isn't surprising given the huge volume of students that attend, however the miles of red tape and forms you'll have to fill out in order to do anything will probably stand out as the worst part of UCI, not to mention the complete lack of concern when there's been a clerical error and you're on the receiving end. You probably say, well, they just had a bad experience. Yes, I did. After calling repeatedly for MONTHS, I finally got an answer concerning an error and yet… I left over 5 messages. I called over 7 offices. Finally after the 4th month I gave up and looked up the schedule of the person I needed to talk to and dealt with the problem myself by catching them in the parking lot before they went off to their next appointment. That's just one story of the seemingly common negative experiences I've had here at UCI. to be honest though, the majority of UCI's problem stem from the amount of students that get funneled through their system every day. On the other hand, I will admit that UCI is probably one of the safest campuses out there. They are always building new offices into the campus, and there is a small park in the center.
