At the U of M, given it's size and the fact that it is a research university, you need to take of yourself. If you need help, you need to seek it out. TA's, RA's, and professor's have other things to worry about than the classes they teach. Some professors just don't care and some do, but in the end it is their job to help, whether they volunteer for it or not. For me, it was great being able to do research as well as academia, but if you need someone to be there to help 24/7, it's probably not for you. In physics, professors are very straight forward, sometimes to point of being cruel, but they always tell you how it is.
