WMU is an average, regional state school that is full of below average students with above average opportunities. For the bright, there are numerous opportunities for research experience, internships, and good jobs on campus. The faculty are very friendly, approachable, and highly overqualified. You will be surprised by the level of prestige and research productivity of the faculty. They all come from very good schools, and are not shy about expressing their disappointment in being at WMU. As a result, they are all too willing to help a good student out and to "rise above" their station by writing excellent letters of recommendation to good grad schools.

The school has a reputation for being a party school and has popularly been dubbed as "Wastern." This is reflected by a less-than-studious student population. Kalamazoo College is nearby however, and Kalamazoo is a vibrant town, so anyone who doesn't fit the stereotype can find like-minded individuals in various hidden pockets of town.

If I had to choose again, I would not choose WMU. That said however, it's not all doom and gloom and I got to experience many more opportunities as the result of being a bright student at a not-so-bright university. Judge WMU by individual departments, not the overall reputation, and be prepared to search out opportunities. In the end it could be worth it.
