Major: Nursing (This Major's Salary over time)
As with any college there are pros and cons. Overall, my experience at SU has been positive; however, my experience in the college of nursing (CON) has been up and down. Things to know when you come to SU: the school is committed to social justice. There are numerous clubs and various activities/events/guest speakers throughout the year that teach about social justice. Although it's a Jesuit college, the religion is not pushed on anyone… the campus is SUPER liberal. In fact, it's so liberal that often conservatives feel out of place… Also know, this is not a party school, the parties are around if you look, but it's not a "wet" campus. BUT UW is close, so many people end up partying over there instead. The professors are usually great. They are accessible and most know you by name. Of course some profs are rude, and full of themselves, but mostly they are dedicated to helping you learn. Take advantage of office hours- the profs like to help you one-on-one. FYI: the school spends A LOT of money on making the school look good- I think plenty of money has been wasted on making the campus look good instead of spending money on more essential things like more on-campus housing or more parking, or more spaces to study, or more activities/resources for students. The location is AMAZING! Literally minutes from downtown Seattle- there are plenty of things to do/see all around the city! Now, about the college of nursing… it's frustrating! Apparently SU college of nursing has an amazing reputation, but most nursing students find the program to be obnoxiously stressful! It has been said that nursing programs "eat their young". They weed out the weak…this does seems true of SU CON, but there are some profs in the CON who are compassionate and who are dedicated to helping students learn. There are lots of issues with logistics & administration (schedules, curriculum, credits, etc) that have been issues for a long time, yet no one has done anything to resolve the issues, so the problems continue every quarter, year after year. The CON really needs to re-evaluate how things are run. There needs to be some serious changes, yet there hasn't been any real change in a long time. The profs are stressed, the students are stressed, some profs are ridiculously hard, and not encouraging… other profs are totally empathic and kind. The CON stresses grades b/c you have to make the grade or you will be kicked out of the program, yet when the majority of students do poorly on exams the profs see that the problem is the students. If no one is doing well in a class perhaps the professor has something to do with it?! The profs need to learn to own up to it, too- They contribute to the grades that their students get! I'm not saying don't join the CON at SU.. I have learned and done a lot of amazing things in the CON, but be prepared for the chaos and frustration. Also, know it will be stressful, but don't let that stop you! Take it as a challenge and let the challenge inspire you to do well! :)
