Harrisonburg, as a city, sucks. But there's plenty to do if you're creative. There is a very, very large hiking scene. There are also plenty of opportunities to go rock climbing, caving, camping, etc. If your idea of night life is "NYC Clubbing," Harrisonburg won't offer you anything. But if your idea of night life is going out and learning how to salsa with an authentic, friendly latin population or attending a Shakespearean play in a reconstructed Black Friar's theater, then Harrisonburg and the surrounding area might be for you.

As a scientist, I greatly dislike how much money is spent on football. Spend the money on academics. A new Science Library has been built and it has a 24 hour study room (accessible with the university's ID card).

For the Physics department, specifically, there are many opportunities to excel. Motivated students take part in research and use lots of high-priced equipment that, at other schools, are usually reserved for grad students or post-docs. They have greatly expanded the department, too, and opened up tons of sections of intro Physics. They have doubled the faculty in the last few years. If you're at all interested in Physics, this is a very good school for it with a lot of ties to other universities. I would not recommend going to JMU if you have aspirations of attending Harvard for graduate school; but if you want to go to Duke, UNC, UVA, etc, you'll be fine and have no problems.

There are a ton of girls here. If you're not socially awkward, you will have girls interested in you. You will hook up. I consider myself an average-to-cute looking guy and my dance card was always full.
