OXY is one of the most over rated college there is. Their elist attitude for a college that does not offer much is undeserving. Their graduation requirements is so stupid with a bunch of useless classes. 2 years of this, a year of that, etc. You graduate from OXY, good luck getting a job. You haven't master in anything including your own major because you are way too busy taking a little bit of everything. You become the expert of generality but don't know much on your major especially if your major is non liberal arts. Good luck with getting employed as an OXY graduate but you will have that elitest attitude though. They are excelling in fostering and nurturing you are so special because you got into OXY. Uum, the acceptance rate is 44%, basically if you have the bucks you get in.
responseOxy is a liberal arts college thus, surprise! has core requirements that contribute to making you a well-rounded individual. Being a science major, oxy has fully prepared me for a scientific career thanks to many biological and physical science classes. Oxy very strongly emphasizes diversity so I'm having trouble understanding where the elitest feeling came from. Furthermore, being one of the liberal arts colleges that gives the most funding, it's clearly not about having the money to get in. Most of the students in the 2011 graduating class already have a job/grant/grad school so you might want to look at those statistics again.
responseAnd that stat for the acceptance rate is incredibly false. True, Occidental College may not be known by everyone, but those who are familiar with the school have nothing but great things to say about the institution and its students. As a science major, I am incredibly prepared for my graduate coursework, and I will start at a new institution for a PhD just a few months after I graduate. Oxy has made me successful in a graduate setting because not only am I knowledgeable in my field, but I also have many other passions and can hold an in depth discussion in other topics, such as politics and history. My summer research professor at Caltech was very impressed, both with my knowledge in the lab and in other subjects. Going to Oxy was one of the best decisions I made. Also, just note that students turned down top tier schools such as NYU and Brown, just for example, to go to Oxy instead. And they have not regretted it.
responseOxy has no engineering major, you are not for real.
responseOxy is still loads better and more prestigious than any of the Cal States. The Oxy students mostly come from well off and/or motivated families. Oxy isn't one of those schools that takes pretty much anyone to get the money.
