Overall UCSC is a good school, though it will depend on what you make of it.

The recent budget cuts have not been kind to the social science/humanitites departments, (where my two majors are), and funding for many other areas has been drastically slashed. However, I believe that the students and faculty generally make up for the frustrations most students will face in getting into classes.

Professors I've encountered know the budget cuts suck, and have oftentimes let in more students than they should have by taking on the grading of papers themselves.

Other staff, like the janitors and groundskeepers, are usually very nice, UCSC seems to be the kind of school where the custodial staff will happily chat for a few minutes.

From my experiences, other students are almost always nice, accepting (even of conservatives, Christians, former-military/ROTC, non-pot-smokers and whoever else the stereotypical UCSC student dislikes), and willing to help you out, from $5, a carpool, or directions to navigate the school's sprawling paths. Of course, like any college, expect assholes.
