In general, CBU is most notable for being a warm, friendly and welcoming place to be. The school makes a great effort, especially for freshmen and transfers, to get students plugged in socially, and you can expect some sort of social event at least a few times a month. The student body is still fairly small, meaning a warmer, closer atmosphere and generally superior student to teacher ratios. The school is also very committed to its Biblically Christian beliefs, so be aware if you are coming in as a non-Christian that almost every class will be taught with a decidedly Christian influence. Teachers are also generally helpful and friendly, though there are always a few rare exceptions.

As far as student services and administration, CBU would definitely be best described as going through some significant growing pains. The school's population has grown tremendously over the past few years and the school is still getting used to housing, feeding, assisting and providing classrooms for such a large numbers of students and majors. The cafeteria can be expected to be quite crowded at certain times of the day and the food choices vary throughout the week from a wealth of different, delicious options, to days where just nothing looks good. Some of the schools aesthetic value has also been scrapped recently with several previously lush lawns becoming last-minute emergency dirt parking lots. Many of these issues should be fixed within the next few years however, as the school is undertaking a daring expansion project and has already drawn up plans and bought property on which to establish new academic buildings, housing, parking and other vital student services.

The school is rapidly adding major options, which is great news for prospective students, but can also cause confusion within the school's academic counseling department. Several of the programs (such as the schools of engineering and nursing, film major and bachelors of music) are just a few years old, and while the university has done a good job of housing these schools, there may be some confusion when acquiring counseling to finish certain degrees. That being said, if you can navigate the school's academic catalog and online degree guide, you can usually figure out things yourself. There aren't really any surprises and the school is generally amenable to finding a solution if/when classes conflict or there is some other issue.

CBU has its fair share of administrative issues, but as far as the student body and teachers are concerned, it is a warm, encouraging, competent university with respectable academics and a solid Christian foundation. It should be on the map for any student looking to attend a Christian university in Southern California.
