In a nutshell, Hillsdale College is nothing more than a training academy for those who would like to work for the Heritage Foundation and/or the Koch Foundation. The students who enjoy this school, of which there are many, do not attend college to learn anything new or to be stimulated intellectually. They attend college in order to reinforce an already well established conservative ideology. They come to Hillsdale for that purpose and Hillsdale gives them what they want.

So, if you are a person who wants to attend college so you can flourish as an individual and learn HOW to think for yourself rather than WHAT to think, DO NOT ATTEND HILLSDALE COLLEGE. Raw individuality is not something that is looked upon highly at Hillsdale, neither by the majority of the students nor the faculty/administration. I mean, protests/picketing of any kind is completely illegal on campus. So much for pursuing truth and defending liberty I guess? Even the music and arts departments are very rigid. Essentially any art form that isn't classically based is severely looked down upon. So don't even think of finding true self expression through the arts. Kind of ironic don't you think?

The town of Hillsdale itself is dreadfully depressing. They have a Wal-Mart and a few good Mexican restaurants. That's about all that can be said about it. The closest town with a mall is Jackson, MI which is about 30-40 minutes away. But Jackson, though a bigger town, is still dreadfully depressing. And don't get me wrong, I am not putting down small towns. I come from a small town. But it is safe to say that south central Michigan may be the anus of America. The town demographic is in stark contrast to the college demographic. The town is mainly poor, working class white trash (go to the Hillsdale County Fair and then tell me I'm wrong) while the College is mostly midwestern, white-bred, upper middle class, with a pinch of minorities. I can literally count on my two hands the number of non-whites that attended Hillsdale during my time there.

As for a social life, there is one to be had but it is very small. Joining a frat/sorority may be the closest thing to a normal college experience you will get here, but it is really not that impressive. Also, if you have any type of self-identity left while attending HC, it will most likely be lost when you join a frat. You're best bet is to find a small group of friends that you like and party exclusively with them, or go to another college. There are also off-campus parties occasionally that can be fun depending on the people. There are very few good looking people at Hillsdale. Most of the good looking people to be found are athletes and greeks, or you never see them because they have become reclusive due to the severe depression they are experiencing as a result of attending Hillsdale College. Or, they left and went to another school. With that said, the uggos tend to be extremely awkward, extremely christian, extremely close-minded homeschoolers who end up marrying each other right after graduation, with means they are unfortunately procreating. Also, most people at Hillsdale, good-looking or not, tend to get married immediately after graduation. So, if you want to be in a relationship here, better be ready to dish out for that ring so you can get married at a time when you are definitely not prepared. No girls gone wild here.

The dormitories, with one exception, are all single sex. If that wasn't bad enough, the school regulates when men and women are allowed to visit each other in the dormitories. You can get away with alot in the men's dorms, but they are true Nazis at the women's dorms. There is ALWAYS a person at the door to force you to sign in and then when visitation is over, Beulah Balbricker (Porky's reference) comes to kick you out like you're some kind of sexual predator for visiting a female.

Finally, I would like to talk about alternative lifestyles here at Hillsdale. Remarkably, there were a few openly homosexual students at Hillsdale during my time there, and several closeted homosexuals pretending to be straight, conservative and christian. The openly gay students were treated with respect as far as I could tell, and found friendships among the few open-minded students at Hillsdale like myself. Regardless, I have no idea why a openly-gay person would want to come here especially since the college recently made an official statement defining there beliefs on sex, marriage, and relationships. This statement basically states that any form of sexual interaction other than heterosexual relations within the context of marriage for the purpose of procreation is immoral and against the core beliefs of the college. Don't believe me? Here's a link to the statement: I used to have a smidgen of respect for Hillsdale until the administration enacted this. Now, I have absolutely no respect for Hillsdale College at all and I am embarrassed to call myself an alumnus of this institution.
