Coming from a small farming town from the Midwest, I find the atmosphere at Hampden-Sydney quite comfortable. Many of the professors and administrators will know you by your first name and you will be acquainted with quite a number of the students. It will also help to be active in a fraternity or a club, as it does get very boring on weekends. But if you like being introverted, that's no problem.

The College also meets the students' needs academically. The courses are rigorous and well-taught. Of course, being a liberal arts college, you will be required to take classes that will mold you into a cultured, well-rounded student (although this sometimes has no effect on some students). As a result, majoring or minoring in any humanities studies is only expected but not required. The science/math departments, too, field the some of the best (and weirdest) professors you will ever meet. I highly suggest taking a science or mathematics course—it may spur some hidden affinity for the subjects.

For the most part, I have had a great time at the College. Social life isn't great, but if you're serious about studying, it almost wouldn't matter. Also, if you can't be serious about studying, then I wouldn't recommend coming here: some freshmen are weeded out due to grades. As some would say, "it's easy to get in, but hard to stay in." Lastly, have an appetite for beer.
