My time at Hope has been unbearable. If I could transfer, I would in a heartbeat. First and foremost, fellow students ARE ALL THE SAME. There is very little diversity of any kind at Hope. Primarily white, straight, young republicans that are obsessed with being politically correct as a replacement for developed political views. 90% of classmates I have met are unintelligent, conformist, "blind-faith" types that paste bible quotes on every imaginable surface. Nothing that comes from their heads or mouths is original or fresh. The collective unconscious could be described as the bastard child of pop culture and deep-seeded American-Christian values. Most students are extremely conflicted (though they wont admit it) between acting as a regular college student and upholding Christian values. Yes, everyone is extremely friendly, but I've found that most of this friendliness is dishonest and motivated by racking up Jesus points. If you are even slightly unusual, you will not fit in at Hope. The average Hope student is not interested in being friends with anyone but people similar to him or her.

Furthermore, staff is not interested in student's well-being. A brief list:

  • Inconvenient dining hours (closes before lab gets out)
  • Short Library hours (closes every day at 12am, doesn't open until 11am on weekends, closes at 6pm on fridays and weekends)
  • Counseling staff try to evangelize you instead of help you
  • Very little public transportation
  • Several instances of mislabeling in dining hall resulting in (life-threatening)allergic reactions. When director was confronted, received little more than "mistakes happen"
  • Hope makes you live in on-campus housing for a MINIMUM of 3 years (expensive, cramped, not up to date)
  • I could go on. In addition, there is not much to do in Holland, so escape from Hope is futile.

On the plus side, the engineering department is extremely competent and I have enjoyed all of my core classes. Gen-eds , on the other hand are all unnecessary busy work and incorporate Christianity even if the class has nothing to do with faith.
