I chose to attend Norfolk State University. This is lost on the administration and faculty at the school - the fact that many people choose to attend NSU and the student didn't just end up there by default. It seems the attitude is that you, the student, don't matter. That's right; the student is not valued at NSU. Is it any wonder enrollment is down at this school?

First, there seems to be the attitude that all black students want to study on Business ( or ?Bidness? according to some at NSU) Administration, Nursing or Secondary Education. If this is not your intended major, well, whatever…you're black, what's your problem you don't want to be like everyone else?

The campus is rundown. The dorms are in need of a complete overhaul from top to bottom. Many of the academic buildings are in deplorable condition. In fact, NSU should just be closed, all the buildings torn down and replaced with a golf course, as it once was.

The NSU administration reflects a "ghetto" mentality and this attitude manifests itself in every aspect of the campus experience. This apathetic and stifled mindset is especially felt when one is dealing with entities such as Student Accounts, Financial Aid and the Office of the Registrar. Simple transactions become unnecessarily complex and often lead to good students having to drop out mid-semester due to insufficient financial aid and inane paperwork issues - issues that are not helped by the school administration.

We all have our individual talents. Well, NSU doesn't see it quite that way. In this world, education is power and NSU is more concerned with promoting the marching band, hosting "Sweatboxes" in the student union building and making sure the young men on campus remove their hats prior to entering the building.

I find some of the rave reviews on NSU laughable. I wish I could give an

opinion, but that just isn't the case. My advice: skip the bulls**t and attend a school where your education is first priority. Find the best school for your area of study; a school that will prepare you for your future and offers valuable educational resources to help students graduate on time such as financial aid; a school that has a healthy, supportive and productive academic and social environment; a school where you as a student are respected and safe. NOTE: This is NOT Norfolk State University!
