Honestly, if I had an opportunity to do it all again or transfer, I would in a heartbeat.
The food here is awful. The freshman cafeteria which is where all your money goes has no variety whatsoever. It's all vegetarian so if you're not one, you're screwed. The other dining hall is super expensive although it does have better food. I've eaten there twice and I'd go back again if I had more money for food there. The freshman cafeteria has the same cycle of food every week so you end up getting tired of eating the same food over and over again.
The sporting events here are okay. I'm a big ice hockey fan and the men's and women's team are nationally ranked Divison 1. They're fun to go to but all of the other sports are virtually non-existent. Even the clubs/extracurriculars are non-existent. The clubs are very poorly put together and they rarely ever have meetings that are worth going to. I joined the pick up ice hockey club and I've emailed them multiple times and they've never responded to me. I've joined other clubs and they've been thrown together hap-hazardly.
Classes aren't particularly difficult. I'm a pretty good student (in the A and B range) and I had no problems with high school with workloads. I thought that since college is one step up from that, that there would be more work but I was wrong. I always have an over abundance of free time where I don't know what to do with myself.
The absolute worst part about this school is that there is absolutely nothing to do on campus or off campus. They say this is a nice college town but that's the biggest lie I've ever heard. The only things around here are an Arby's and a CVS. The only way to get to the mall is using public transportation which is almost always unreliable and very confusing to use. The buses are either late or they don't show up at all. If you do end up going to the mall, you may want to have someone with a cars phone number in your cell so you can call them. There is nothing within walking distance that's worth while going to off campus. Erie is a really depressed town that is really shady and has creepy people walking around all over it, many of which have criminal records. When you come for visits, the guide usually says that the student government is a huge prescence on campus but that's false. They never hold any events and in the rare chance they do, it's usually something stupid like bingo night. Please, don't just come here because of the visits or how pretty you think this school is. I'm only in my second term here as a freshman and I'm thinking of transferring because of how unhappy I am. Do your research about this school.
Career Services:
Yearly "job fair"-attendees include local supermarkets (not kidding) commissioned based sales jobs that require no degree (aflac, waddell and reed, cutco), local small businesses, and military recruiters. Staff is at best incompetent. The director just abandoned his sinking ship and the next in command couldn't find his way out of a paper bag (just being honest). They will provide you with no assistance for anything (please trust me I trued a lot).
Faculty:
Although there are some good professors and most of the faculty is "nice", the school still falls short in several ways.
-First, let us start at the top: The dean of the school also serves in a major roll for the College's top tier "Intelligence Studies" program. Needless to say, most of the time he is not in his office and most students couldn't tell you his name if asked.
-Next in command: the assistant dean-She has no real world business experience and despite being a decent person, cannot handle both her role and the responsibilities left to her by the mostly absent Dean. Needless to say this has not promoted growth and development of the program.
-Curriculum: If you are looking for a hands on experience in application of theory to practice don't come here. If you are looking for courses technically specialized for your major don't come here. If you are looking for energetic faculty fresh out of their field and conducting any sort of academic research don't come here. If you are looking for an education that you could have derived off of wikipedia or a few books in the library-You're in luck!
Grading: Very corrupt and inconsistent. Teachers heavily favor international students and cheating is an epidemic.
Cost:
With a tuition bill that costs as much as an Ivy League school, you tell me if what Mercyhurst has to offer is worth the money.
I really hope I helped you decide. I just don't want people to make the same mistake I did.
