My year at Binghamton University has been a good one but I largely think it has because I have met great people and I am a college type person. My entire life I have looked forward to this opportunity. Generally I consider myself an intellectual snob (I feel I cannot help myself) so in general I find people on this campus to notbe the brightest bulbs on the Christmas tree,if you know what I mean? The dorms are very nice and there is very nice community living and people love living on campus. But this causes the problem that there is not enough housing and freshman get tripled in a double room which is not a pleasant experience! The Binghamton Scholars Program is good, though just in its early stages. Students get big benefit out of this but there is no way to apply to be in this, they look @ your application and they either take you or you don't. This gives you merit scholarships and other perks. In general, people don't seem to care for learning for its own sake but so that they make money and they do what they're supposed to do. There are a number of amazing people on this campus who seem to do everything—newspaper, student government, music, theater—but then there are several thousand people who just don't seem to care about anything but their petty lives, and possibly their frat/sorority. People like to drink, and it can be very hard to meet intellectual people. By intellectuals I mean people who DO NOT spend their entire weekend studying, but actually care about discussing things. |
