Some of this is due to the fact that I've decided I want to study Computer Engineering, which W&M doesn't offer. However, I believe the main reason I'm leaving W&M is because I did not like my first year there. Coming from a major metropolitan area, I found the campus and surrounding city to be very boring. Williamsburg is extremely isolated from the rest of the world and is, in my opinion, not a good place to live if you are a young person, particularly a college student. Aside from two or three "bars", there are a few restaurants and not much else. There really is no downtown, no cultural events or venues, just a college and a tourist area.In terms of the on-campus experience itself, I found that many of the students I became friendly with were similarly disappointed in the school. Many students are negative and never stop complaining about things such as the food, Parking Services, the almost demoralizing low grades they receive, and the lack of fun or social things to do. I came in with a positive attitude about the year ahead and finished the year quite unhappy. I truly believe that a large number of students wish they were going to a different college.Perhaps the only mitigating factors might be the high quality of the education one can receive at this school, and the strong friendships one can form in the greek system. After pledging a fraternity, I only wish that I could take all my brothers with me when I transfer.I'm sure this response stands in opposition to what many have written about this school, but I offer it as my only honest opinion of William and Mary. |
