Take what you can from the University because it can be tough if you're emotionally down. Take advantage of events and clubs on campus and expose yourself to wide range of experiences because being such a large university, you're bound to get lost, especially if you're in your 1st or 2nd year. If you're in a bad crowd, look for another. Your academic experience can be bad if your personal life is not going well.

I spent all four years at UMASS and, although I couold have done better academically, I felt I didn't put in as much time into my studies as I could have. It's not an institution that coddles you, especially if you're lazy and professors can be pretty unforgiving if you don't work. Many students expect a lot from universities, particularly general guidance, but you'll have to find that on your own. At the undergraduate level, especially, this feature of the university will not be readily available.
