The academics were great, the social life was fun and sports were incredible as well. The school is definitely a rich one, and most people dress in the traditional preppy attire. Almost everything about the school was great except its location and safety. That part was depressing. The area right outside the university is a low income, predominantly African American area. There are a lot of people in the surrounding area that are struggling to economically make ends meet. And, they are next to Duke, where the average student comes from a filthy rich household. Sure, there are community outreach programs for Duke students in the community. But mostly, the Duke students use the surrounding area for buying drugs, which is the rich exploiting the poor. I found that to be sad, sad that America can let something like this happen. It is exactly like in the movie Traffic. The campus isn't too safe either, I was robbed at gunpoint while walking back to my dorm at dusk. So, all in all, the school is amazing and there are some low points that one should be aware of. |
