I don't find it fun to slip into drunkenness nearly every Friday and Saturday night with my friends. I like to socialize, though I wish the entirely of IV didn't reek of alcohol. Other than that, the community is lively, friendly and quite unique. I love how everyone seems to know each other. I am quite at home in Goleta, Santa Barbara and sometimes even IV; I will miss the small town feel of Goleta when I leave this place. On the academic side of things, I enjoy my department tremendously. The work is interesting and I am not penalized for having my own ideas. Apparently, the professors in philosophy are comparatively approachable and the class sizes are small. I know that in other departments, many classes will be large, Economics and Sociology, for example, but never shy away from asking a professor a question. You are paying them to teach you. One more thing about the students, I find that many are trendy in the way they think about things. Yes, we typically are a product of the society we live in, but come on, stop following the bandwagon when it comes to politics and religon in academia. Find you own thoughts. For future students: being different and friendly, ie, a nice approachable yet non-condescending vocal anarcho-capitalist, will get you noticed. Being another sweet person who follows the trends is less likely to. |
