I sometimes think Mudd is the worst place ever. Why, you ask? Many reasons.

First off Mudd has no grade inflation. None. Finito. Zip. Zilch. Nyet. I didn't care about what my grades were coming into Mudd, and I still don't care that much. However, other people do. Mudd doesn't have the name notority of Caltech or MIT, so that hard earned 2.9GPA (which is darn good here) is going to look just 2.9GPA for anywhere else. Which is, in a word, bad. The admissions department will feed you some line about how all the prestigous employers know about Mudd, and will take you even with the low GPA, etc, etc. Bull-shit. Mudd is well known in the academic community, but trying to get a job with a Mudd degree is like trying to get a job with a degree anywhere else, except with a lower GPA. What saves Mudd in the rankings is the fact that so many Mudd students have rich parents that are willing to send their little prince or princess to grad school (where GPAs go up substainaly).

The much touted required classes, also known as the core, suck. Hard. They drive up the credit requirements to the point of absurdity, tend to be more difficult rehashes of things learned in AP courses taught in a far more confusing manner, and delay entry into major track courses. At any other school most Mudd students would pass out of these courses. At Mudd they just relearn the same material over and have to fight amongst themselves for grades. I have no doubt HMC wins the award for most insanely hard grading in a general science course.

Which brings up another point. Mudd absolutely refuses to grant credit for any coursework done before matriculation. You can pass out of classes, but you don't get credit for them, which means you are still stuck taking a 15.5 credit/unit load every semester while you are here. Most Mudd freshman would be sophomores at state schools.

In conclusion I highly advise against coming here. If you are like me you probably think that you can handle it. It may be hard, but you like hard. Believe you me, it's not worth it. It's like a drug. Even though I can't stand it most of the time, I'm coming back next semester, simply to prove that I can.
