OK, I have a lot to say to prospective students b/c I transferred into SU for my sophomore year (from the notorious RIT) and I wanted to give a well-rounded view of the school:

It has many good programs (communications, poly sci, business, IS), but other than those mentioned, the other programs are fairly average (not top-50 in the country). You will also encounter a diverse, wide range of students, from very smart and intellectual to just average. The school itself is the perfect size b/c you always see familiar faces, but there is always the opportunity to meet new people. Most classes (other than intro courses) are high-school sized. In general, I would say that the business classes I've taken are average in difficulty, but tough when it comes to testing and grading. Conversation outside of the classroom is usually based on the social-scene, which is fine for me.

As for the social life, I think it is great overall. Guys- the girls are hot and they are plentiful. And no, most of them are not stuck-up bitches, even if they are very wealthy. Greek life, which I'm involved in, is big and allows you to find your niche. SU's athletic program is strong and the games are a lot of fun at the famous Carrier Dome. In fact, I was one of many to camp put for tix to the Final 4 and go down to New Orleans to watch the Orange win the National Championship. Everyone sports 'SU' gear on campus, so school spirit is alive and well.

Many students do not even need to leave campus to do something (as Princeton Review ranks SU top-5 in the country for most-to-do on campus.) There are always random events, sporting events, concerts, parties, or eating/bars on M-Street (College Ave.) If you are not from a big city, I think the city is under-rated in what it offers for its size (about half the size of a city like Buffalo.) There is a nightlife district downtown that is dec, a huge shopping mall in the city, and outdoor recreational opportunities that can be found within 10 minutes to an hour away (such as golf, skiing, white-water rafting, etc.) It's not as bad as some people make it out to be, but obviously could be better.

Although it has its negatives - it is expensive (but not so bad if you are offered a scholarship like me) and gets cold (which I am already accustomed to and prefer over intense heat), Syracuse makes for a great college experience. I have visited many other colleges (at least 20 different ones), and I consider myself lucky to go to SU.
