CSU Long Beach is a wonderful school. I was a transfer student from a California Community College with a gpa of 3.67. My CSULB gpa was a 4.0 and my graduating gpa was 3.91.

I was more than eligible for a UC but could not afford to go to school full-time and found that the CSU was much more working-student friendly.

MY DEPARTMENT (HISTORY):

I gave my department rating a B+ because I believe that is a good program but could improve in some aspects, which as I understand it has worked to improve the quality of the program by adding a senior paper. Good work guys!

Most of my professors were approachable and more importantly, accessible. Most were dedicated to their students while a minority of the profs I feel needed to either find their passion for teaching (again) or retire.

Since it is a Cal State, the programs are not set up for research; however, the opportunity is there if you want it.

Overall, I met some wonderful profs and have them to thank for my admissions to a graduate program.

THE UNIVERSITY:

Physically, the campus is beautiful with trees, flowers, greens, art work, a 14 story pyramid, and a Japanese garden! It was the beauty of the campus that struck me the first time I set foot on CSULB.

Safety, well it's Long Beach and yes it has its problems in the city. But the campus is surrounded by a nice middle-class neighborhood. Besides, they campus really went out of its way to make the students feel safe with escorts and police. Most of the bad things I heard about involved people having things stolen out of their car. Note: never leave a cell phone on your front seat! Which brings me to parking…its a pisser especially with 34,000 students attending, but I never had a problem with it. There is always parking in deep roving left field. I always found the people who complained were the parking space hawks who will sit for close to 1/2 hour for the best spot even it meant being late to class. Sorry I have no sympathy for these lazy parking lot hawks…arrive early and walk or use the shuttle that runs on the campus all day.

Buildings, most of the buildings were built in the 1950/60's so some need to be torn down…as far as I am concerned. But CSULB also has some new edifices that are a welcomed addition to the campus. The library could use a remodel!

SOCIAL ACTIVITY:

I was a working student and yes, the campus is a commuter campus. But there was always something going on that I felt would have been great for the younger students. It is there if you want it. CSULB host many festivals, especially culture and Jazz.

Sports, well we have a top notch volleyball team but if you like football, you won't find it here. I am not much into sports so that really was not a factor for me.

OVERALL:

I enjoyed my time at CSU Long Beach. Do I wonder about what my experience would have been at a UC or a private campus, sure I do. However, for me I needed to keep my job and CSULB allowed me to go at my own pace. Also, I like the fact that while some campuses (like the UC and private) make the claim of being a diverse campus, CSULB truly has it. Every ethnicity AND CLASS group is represented there and I liked that feeling. You don't get the feeling that you are at a campus that will turn you into an elitist clone.
