I was a science major, and having become involved with science education and research, as both a student and teacher, I am continually impressed with the preparation I received at Antioch. The co-op program exposed me to at least three extended work experiences of three months or more that have played an important role in my professional development and given me the chance to get experience in research, education, and the business aspects of science as it is currently practiced. It takes a special type of student to thrive at Antioch and ultra-competitive types will likely flounder without the common gauge of grades. The co-op work experiences force you to think of the outcome of an education not a way to get a job but rather as a way to become a full human being and citizen. One leaves Antioch with a critical eye to the happenings of the world, a demand for social justice, and the tools to forge your own path in a world hell-bent on forcing people into ordinary pathways and rigid little boxes. By far the most enduring aspect of my Antioch education has been the power to put my convictions and passions to the forefront of my everyday living. |
