It took me 4 years to realize how well connected they are. It turns out I had one professor who was friends with the dean to my grad school and another who was well acquainted with my supervisor at a prestigious lab. Classes within chemistry and biology departments range from average to excellent. The upper level electives are taught in small classes and are invaluable. However, it's easy to get lost in the weedout classes, as in any other big university. There is a lot of uneccessary busy work in general chem. Also, if you're in sciences but don't want to go to med or grad school, good luck. Department advisors won't know what to tell you. On-campus lab jobs are limited and very competitive. Overall, I got an excellent education. As far as social lives go, everyone I know finds their nitch, but I find many NYU students like to complain about the scene. I don't know what they're expecting. With such a big school, you're not going to be friends with everyone. We have everything from the dissidents who publish underground magazines, to the frat boys that overcrowd 3rd avenue bars. I've met dragqueens and kids imprisoned for storming MTV studios. You meet people of all opinions, lifestyles and from all walks of life. The diversity is what makes it great. But girls, you probably will have to date outside the NYU community. The rumors are true. Boys tend to be gay, taken, or weird. |
