I think that many comments you read about GWU are true, but they aren't always negatives, especially when compared to other schools. I think that GW students are bright and outspoken and that is why you hear so much criticism about the university. However, there are many positives about attending GW that I would like to point out. First, living in DC is an education in and of itself which greatly supplements everything you learn in the classroom. You have ready access to the President, Congress, the Supreme Court, the military, ambassadors, and almost every major political, economic, international, and social organization you can imagine, plus much, much more. The research opportunities alone are amazing - e.g. the Library of Congress. You don't find those same opportunities or resources anywhere outside of DC. Second, while the bar scene may leave a lot to be desired, the diverse cultural activities are great for those who have other interests besides partying such as top-notch museums, art, monuments, social events, music, theater, religion, dining etc. Third, the dorms, while they may be in short-supply, were the envy of all my friends at other colleges who lived in tiny cells with gross public bathrooms. Fourth, the classes are interesting if you do some research and figure out what are the better majors, departments, and professors. If you can't find something worth studying then you are not trying. FYI, I highly recommend studying abroad which tons of GW students do. Fifth, if you schedule properly you can have Fridays off to work at an excellent job or internship. At GW you can intern at the White House, volunteer for you favorite nonprofit, work for a multinational company or whatever your heart desires. Meanwhile your friends at other schools will be washing dishes at their cafeteria. If you play your cards right at the George Washington University you can gain valuable education, employment, and life experience that you can't easily find elsewhere. It's definitely not a place for students who need to be coddled. Nevertheless, independent, adventurous, and outgoing students will enjoy the exposure to the world at large that only GWU provides.
