Cal is a great and unique school. I earned by Ph.D in the psychology department. It is tough, however. As graduate students and graduate student instructors, we were more focused on becoming top notch researchers. That often meant that we didn't want to connect with the students at their lower level of understanding. I felt that we only tried to reach the top 5% who would go to a similar top rated psychology deparment for graduate school. That left about 95% who we didn' t care much about. Such an environment is great if you want to become a top notch researcher. Indeed, it seems as if many of the people who won the Early Contribution Award from APA, for example, were undergraduates at Cal. That's quite impressive and shows how Cal provides opportunities for those special individuals who can seek them out. Students think the graduate students and professors don't care about them at all. But that isn't quite true. They may be intimidating, but if one persistently contacts a professor or instructor, they can get some contact. If you are not completely prepared for college, or need to feel the teachers should attend to your needs, Cal is the wrong place for you. But if you want to overcome challenges and feel you can cope with an ultra competetive environment, then go to Cal.
