True, I made a couple of lifelong friends, so I guess everything happens for a reason. But the school has so many problems, it's not even worth the hassle or the ulcers. I would have to say I had a pretty bad college experience at FAMU that I do not think I would have received had I attended another university (which I could have done with my GPA and test scores). FAMU has new guidelines every other day and will spring them on you right before graduation. They pick and choose who they want to use certain rules with and everything is disorganized. Not to mention I never got advised until my senior year (when it didn't even matter anymore)!! I've graduated with two degrees and now they're sending me a letter saying one of my degrees have been denied, and it's all because of a mistake that they've made. They're saying I have until the 19th to clear up the misunderstanding before I have to wait ANOTHER SEMESTER to reapply for graduation (whose graduation application deadline passed before they even dated the letter, I was told by a current graduating student!). They didn't even mail out that letter until the 15th, THREE DAYS after the Spring 04 graduation deadline! I received it today the 17th (a SATURDAY, at that!) and Monday is MLK Day so it's a holiday!!! So there's no way this will be cleared up by the 19th because they're not even open again til the 20th!! To make matters worse, I've already sent my resume out for jobs with both of my degrees listed!! And what is happening to me is not a rareity. This is the type of thing FAMU is notorious for. They like to screw you up and try to stress you out as best as they can, JUST BECAUSE… Not to mention the financial problems, but I'm not even going to go into that because I'd be here all day. I hate that I have to say this, but it's the truth. FAMU has a lot of cleaning up to do and just because it's an HBCU doesn't mean I should try to cover up all of their ever-prevalent faults (which many alumni do). On the flip side, it is a good school to get acquainted culturally. The Psychology department and Criminal Justice departments are good with incorporating racial issues into the lessons and have taught me a lot in those areas. The Poetry scene is hype and so are the events (i.e., Homecoming, shows, parties, etc.). Besides that, I have little to say about FAMU that is positive and I would definitely NOT recruit anyone to attend this school. I only hope it will get better. |
