I went there because it called to me. I didn't want to go anywhere else. I ended up a bit disappointed, however, but that could have been personal. Should you choose to attend, Reed will be a very difficult place - not just academically, but socially and emotionally as well. It gets pretty awkward at times, being a small school with lots of very intense people crammed together and forced to live, work, and learn next to each other for 4 years. I'm not sure if Reed was worth it, but if it calls to you as strongly as it does a lot of people, you should probably go because you'll always wonder what you missed out on if you don't. It does have its high points - everyone there is extremely intelligent and interesting, and to some extent the culture there really does promote free, critical thought and spontaneous expressions of spirit and intellect. The ideals behind Reed are wholly admirable, though they don't always work in practice. Proceed with caution, but once there give it all you've got. You will have moments when you regret you came, but you will also have those times when you know it wouldn't have been the same anywhere else. |
