This is a competitive environment, with almost everyone around you having some sort of impressive-sounding internship. A lot of students here have a tough time juggling academics and extra-curricular stuff; people are very very into the things they do outside of class, whether it be political or not. It took me some time to find my niche at GW and there are times when I have found it difficult to justify the massive financial cost of being here. You need to be a very resourceful person to have a good experience here. Sometimes I feel like my friends are business executives and I have to schedule some time to have fun with them, few people just aimlessly hang out… But the opportunities that are open to you here in DC are awesome and I don't believe you will get it elsewhere. I also think that GW students finish college as some of the most employable people on the planet, the transition to the working world is not that difficult. There is a great night life here, you will never be bored. As a high school student, I think it is difficult to have the fore-site to know if this is the place for you. You need to think way beyond how cool it would be to go to school 4 blocks from the White House. I guess I just underestimated how challenging (in every sense) GW would be. There are lots of very politically savvy and genuinely intelligent people here and at times it can be intimidating. However once I found my place and a few true friends I felt a lot more comfortable here and have also become stronger as a result. Like any college - GW is what you make of it. |
