As an alumnus of Old Westbury (Class of 1986), I have to say the college prepared me well for a career in technology. I am currently a Database Administrator at a large insurance company in New England. While I attended Old Westbury there was a negative perception of the school, just as there is today. However, if you are willing to apply yourself, it can be a great and affordable experience. By the way, all of my friends who majored in Computer Science at Old Westbury are quite successful today. I believe this reflects positively on the college. That’s not to say we were all geeks, we had our fun too. The Tuesday night “study” group at the Ground Round in Hicksville with pitchers of beer and chicken wings was always a blast. The ACM Holiday and spring break parties were also a lot of fun. I also found that the Old Westbury library had books that exclusive college libraries did not, my girlfriend (future wife) attended Hamilton College in upstate New York, and she was doing a project that required some pretty intense math books, the Hamilton College library didn’t have them, but sure enough Old Westbury had the books. Anyway, if you’re attending Old Westbury make the best of it. It is what you make of it. |
