I left the university after my first semester and I would never recommend it to anyone. While masquerading as a "Christian institution", BJU teaches only the rigid following of blind tradition and a list of rules assembled by men and completely devoid of God's Word. I was raised in a "BJ church" (If you were, you know what I am talking about.) and I never thought that I would say this about a school that has probably done some good for the cause of Christ, but Bob Jones has drifted dangerously close to racism and sexism (among other things). For instance, most people have probably heard of the interracial dating rule. Even if you don't support interracial marriage, at BJU the "dating rules" kick in if you are only having a casual conversation on a public sidewalk in broad daylight. In other words they, for years, maintained a policy that students could not socialize in anyway with a person of the opposite sex that is a different race. The university also has different rules and standards for guys vs. girls. I am not talking about the obvious things, modesty and so forth, but women on the campus are much more restricted than men to the point of being ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I am not a feminist. Most people would consider me a very conservative person. Wow, I have run on and on without getting to the most important point. Bob Jones was based on Christian principles, but it has lost sight of the awesome love of God. The university's administration has forgotten that the most important thing is a personal relationship with God, not the appearance of spirituality. Any lost person can put on a long skirt (or a tie for the guys) but that does not mean anything if they don't have a relationship with our Creator. BJU has drifted over the years from being about the relationship to being all about a religion. I would advise you to consider other universities. In my experience, you can actually grow more spiritually in a state school (and contrary to popular opinion, yes there are many great Bible and church groups to get involved in) than you can in a place where everything is about hipocrisy. |
