The president here is a business-man who cares only for profit and boosting the school's image as a research institution. The on-campus food gets old fast. Students can only move off-campus once they've finished sophomore year. The academics aren't up to my standards, but then again, I'm a national merit semi-finalist who fell through the cracks in high school. There actually are a number of engaging, intelligent faculty (my literature professor got her phd and masters from harvard) - these profs are generally found in upperclassmen courses. UVM is the type of school where a person can either take bogus, obscure courses while getting trashed/stoned every night or where a person can invest his/herself into classes and extracurriculars while finding a lot of time to have fun and still make it into a prestigious grad school. There are lots of cool, nice kids at this school - no one has a problem making friends unless, of course, you apply to live at redstone campus as a freshman (a predominantly sophomore living complex) instead of an all-freshman dorm. If you listen to a conversation between typical students, you generally won't hear anything very intellectual or deep but stuff about sex, alcohol, weed, and local snowboarding conditions. |
