I have a B.A. from Coastal and my GPA there is 3.47. I grew up in the same town that CCU is located in (Conway, SC), so I am very familiar with the school.

CCU's biggest claim to fame right now is its Wall School of Business, which is AACSB accredited. This is probably the most popular major at CCU right now. Also, beginning in Fall 2006, CCU will begin its new MBA program. The work in the Wall School is challenging and the professors are well qualified. As with any university, there are a few professors that aren't well liked, but for the most part the instructors are friendly and approachable.

Other popular majors at CCU are the Marine Science program and the Education program. Coastal has recently added several new majors and offers a few master's degrees as well.

Coastal is growing at a rapid pace due to the increasing number of out-of-state students who flock to the Myrtle Beach area (a.k.a. "The Grand Strand") to go to school. Most of the buildings are pretty new for the most part and the campus is wooded and landscaped nicely. The campus is relatively small and nearly everything is within walking distance.

The biggest gripe among students is probably the parking issue. Parking is a major problem at CCU, since the student population has vastly outgrown the small campus. This past year, the school finally added a shuttle bus service. The campus crime rate is not terrible, but with more students, the incidents do seem to rise every year.

The Myrtle Beach area offers plenty of things to do as far as nightlife, shopping, concerts, dining, golf, etc…

The weather is great for most of the year (mild to warm spring, hot and humid summers, brisk autumns and relatively cold winters)

My only real gripe is the learning atmosphere at Coastal. The school admits a lot of students who have no business in college whatsoever. A lot of students come from out-of-state (especially the New York-New Jersey area) just to party and enjoy the beach nightlife. The learning atmosphere at Coastal suffers because of this. You will see plenty of kids going to class in their pajamas, people with multiple piercings and tattoos, lots of scantily-clad girls (most of whom aren't all that attractive and shouldn't be showing off their bodies to begin with) and a bunch of students whose sole purpose in life is seemingly to get wasted. This is most definately a party school so if that makes you uncomfortable or distracts you, this probably isn't the place for you.

The sports scene at Coastal is great. The top draw is the football team which competes on the NCAA I-AA level out of the Big South Conference. We just added football in 2003 and the team has gone 25-8 in three years.

The baseball team is probably the most successful of all CCU sports teams. Coach Gary Gilmore's teams are a perennial favorite in the Big South Conference and have now been to the NCAA Regionals for 5 consecutive years. In 2005, the Chanticleer baseball team earned a #1 seed in the Tempe Regional!

The soccer team is a regular in the NCAA playoffs, the men's and women's basketball teams are improving and the softball team is pretty decent. CCU also has a great track and field team as well as a solid volleyball team.

The biggest news coming out of CCU right now is the construction of a new 7,000 seat Sports and Entertainment Arena on campus. This should be finished sometime in 2007 and will host plenty of CCU sporting events, a minor-league hockey team and concerts as well.
