George Mason University IS a predominantly commuter school. However, there are those who DON'T commute, and in my opinion, that's where the fun is at.

I've read many reviews talking about how "this isn't a real college" and "there is no social life", etc.

I'm believe that either

A. These people are commuters who DON'T take part in Mason.

B. These people are just downright anti-social.

The social life at Mason has been nothing but rewarding to me. No, Mason is not your JMU or Radford in parties, but I have been to other MAJOR schools such as VT and UVA and have had just as much fun at Mason as I have at those.

Living on campus is the key to Mason being social. Everyone who lives on campus basically has the same mindset, school during the week, fun on the weekend.

It is true that at Mason, a lot of it is who you know. Fortunately, I've been able to meet a lot of people, therefore, I usually know of something going on every weekend party wise. From the small 20-30 people gatherings, to the bigger 60-80 people gatherings.

No there aren't a lot of "hot spots" for this school, only 2-3 I can think of, however, more people have been moving off campus, and on campus is insanely packed and wait listed beyond belief.

I think I've only had maybe one boring weekend night at Mason, and that's pretty good in my opinion.

The location of Mason in my opinion is wonderful in more than one way. Bars are everywhere, from right down the street to DC. If you're 21…HOW CAN YOU BE BORED AT THIS PLACE? I would have never been to so many awesome bars if it wasn't for this place.

Also with the location is great opportunities for internships, job connections, etc.

My advice:

If you live in this area, don't go to school here, it won't be as fun. Going to college where you grew up is not going to be fun as you've

seen it all and done it all
before. It defeats the whole purpose of college in being out on your own. Living with your parents isn't going to allow you to have that fun you're striving for.

Living on campus and away from the area makes this school a great place becasue of the social life (yes, there is a social life) on campus and the many activities that you haven't repeatedly done.

My only complaint is the people who bring this school down. These are the people who live at home with their parents, but want this school to be like they don't. If you go to any school and live at home with your parents, your college experience won't be as rewarding.

In summary: It's your fault for choosing Mason when you commute, not everyone elses.
