It is a big place, and there is the possibility of feeling like a number, but the student needs to take ownership of his/her experience and get involved! I personally found research on campus to be very stimulating and accessible for all students who are interested. Joining a lab group in social psychology was the BEST choice I made while in school. It connected me to a quality instructor and researcher (who I still speak with, even four years after graduation!) and other motivated students who had similar academic interests. I know it's cliche, but the most important education really does take place outside of the classroom walls. If you're not the type to take initiative and take chances, UW-Madison is not the place for you. You'll get lost in the crowd and end up with lots of fun drinking stories, but you'll wonder what your tuition money got you. |
