My major was Medical Billing & Coding, and my advice to you is, if your daily schedule permits it, whatever additional tests, training, or courses pertaining to your field is available, take them. If you do not have the money now then save your money and take whatever state and/or national certification test(s) that you need to take to further your career. Your chances at getting a job in Medical Billing or Medical Coding are slim to none when you are fresh out of school with no real work experience and no type of certification in the medical field. Buy your own Coding (Hospital and Medical Office), Insurance Billing, and Trascription books to keep yourself current on new codes and procedures. Also, if you know that you may not have the money to take your desired certification test(s) once you graduate, then try your best to save the money while you are actively in school so that once you've finished the program you can take the

test(s) for the discounted amount they offer to students, before your aloted time runs out. Keeping current will help you a great deal when it comes to taking the tests needed to get yourself certified. If you cannot afford to buy these books new, please do not hesitatse or be ashamed to ask the staff if you could have any unused books, borrow their books, or if they sale their books at a discounted price. I've learned that TBI's staff is very helpful and they will do whatever they can to help their students proceed and succeed.

I say these things because I maintained an A/B average and graduated with a 3.76 GPA, I loved my instructors, my classes, and I truely enjoyed this field of work. All courses were equally informative and helpful, including the Customer Service and Employment classes, however, I did not take the state or national tests you have to take in order to become certified, nor did I buy any Medical Billing, Coding, or Transcription Books to help keep myself current. I am now looking for refresher courses in these subjects (and I haven't been successful with that so far). Although I applied for many jobs (online and in person) I was always told that if I was certified or had at least 1 year experience they would be glad to give me the job. You can't gain experience in this field if experience is what every employer is looking for. I'm not saying it is impossible to find a job without certification but it does make things harder. It also makes a difference when it comes to salary. Sometimes you may have to start from rock bottom just to work your way up to where you would have started if you were certified.
